But you said that you love me?

Updated: Jul 31, 2024

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I remember the first time that we met
Your eyes lit up with delight
You told me I was perfect
And the answer to your plight
I was sad to leave my friends and home
So scared and full of fright
~But you said that you love me
So I thought I'd be alright
You asked of me so many things
I found it hard to understand
I was never asked permission
Every request was on demand.
Higher, faster, better moves
The pressure grew and grew
~But you said that you love me
So I did my best for you
The stinging from the whipping rope
Jabbing metal from each foot
I cannot scream or make a noise
My mouth is clamped and shut
My eyes and nose communicate
that I am feeling stressed
~But you said that you love me
So I believed you knew what's best
When my body broke and I couldn't win
I no longer made you proud
You looked away when the trailer came
Though I called and called out loud
As I waited for my turn to come
on the final factory line
I closed my eyes and went inside
to a forgotten peaceful time.
And as my spirit rose above
My body left to die
I wondered WHY
you said you loved me,
If your love was just a lie?
